Allan Simmons Jnr.

When Allan Jnr left college in 1988 he joined his father in his part-time carpet cleaning business as a shareholding partner.  Allan Jnr. ran the business full time until Allan Sr became full time too in 1989.  Having done 'every job' in the business Allan Jnr looked after all the commercial contract clients and the domestic customer service areas of that business.  Allan Jnr. left that business in March 2016 to start his own business doing specialist stone floor cleaning and restoration, Clean & Dry was formed.  When Allan Jnr's father decided to retire in April 2018 Allan took on the technicians his father had employed to work with him on stone floor restoration.  After some persuasion from them, Allan added carpet cleaning to his service offering at Clean & Dry too.  As the technicians were already fully trained and ready to go they said it would be mad not to.  Allan Jnr will be the one that chases you up if we've not had your questionnaire back, just to make sure everything was okay. He's a strong black coffee drinker. He's also been a keen magician since he was young and performs as a close-up magician in his spare time.  He loves his motorbike and a Sunday ride out.

Full details coming soon.

Kevin Waters

Kevin is one of our Senior Technicians and has worked with Allan since the early 90's, I know, he doesn't look old enough does he?  He does most of our domestic quotations so is probably the first person you will meet.  He has a wealth of knowledge and experience so just ask him anything you like.  If he doesn't know you can bet he knows 'a man who does'.  In his spare time he enjoys his motorbike and gardening.  Kevin prefers coffee, white no sugar and chocolate biscuits.

Wayne Quiddington

Another Senior Technician who has worked with Allan for what feels like forever.  Although trained in all areas to the highest levels we look to Wayne as our leather specialist.  The most frequent comment we receive on questionnaires about Wayne is "he never stopped!", that's until the job is done then he prefers Coffee, white no sugar and biscuits to recharge.  In his spare time he's into his football and is an active youth team coach, plays pool and is somewhat of an artist on the quiet (but the other guy's didn't know that until now)

Pete Dorans

A Senior Technician with a wealth of knowledge and experience.  The most frequent comment we receive about Pete is "very conscientious".  While he's great at cleaning carpets and upholstery he dislikes repairing equipment, so 'pulls in a favour' with John if his kit breaks.  Pete has many clients who insist Pete does their cleaning, and some will even wait until he's back from holiday for their cleaning appointment.  Pete's poison is STRONG Tea, white one sugar.  Oh, he's usually the first in very early in the morning, we think it's to make sure his cuppa is made just how he likes it.

John Gillespie

Another Senior Technician who has Allan since the last century!  With probably the thickest training file record in the business, there's not much John doesn't know about carpets, upholstery and stone or hard floor cleaning.  He was also our first technician to be fully qualified in hard and stone floor cleaning and restoration.  With more and more hard floors out there and clients asking us if we cleaned them we thought it was about time we offered the service and had an in-house specialist.  He's not bad at fixing kit either, but woe betides you if you borrow his tools in the workshop and don't put them back. John is a Tea, white with 'half and half' if you have it.

BBC's Rogue Traders exposed what some carpet cleaning companies are up to...

It's a tactic known as 'Bait & Switch' and is now illegal, but there are still companies out there 'at it'.
Here's the clip from the TV programme...

You can be sure we'll not use this tactic and for your Peace of Mind we've been audited by the Which? Consumer Organisation and are one of their Which? Trusted Traders.  Which? audit our pricing practices to ensure we're not using Bait & Switch and that when we say you're getting a discount, it's a genuine discount.

As the weather gets warmer and Spring settles in many people will start to snuffle and sneeze, trumpeting that allergy season is in full swing. The warmer weather is a welcome change from the chilly winter, but it also brings a wide variety of allergens like pollen, which can find its way into carpets and upholstery and stick. Regular carpet cleaning to remove allergens and grout cleaning to keep your tiles free from moulds are a vital part of keeping allergies at bay so that instead of suffering from a running nose and watery eyes, you can enjoy the warm weather and longer days. Here are a few other tips to help you keep your home fresher, healthier and allergy free!

Mum & Daughter on Bed
.
Dust mites are inevitable and even the cleanest of homes are not safe from the invasion of these unwanted residents. Whilst it's impossible to totally eliminate them from your home there are several steps you can take to dramatically reduce dust mites and their harmful allergens to keep your family protected..
...
  • Wash your bedding at least once a week on a 60 degree wash – The simple truth is that dust mites are hardly little critters.  They can survive when washed at a low temperatures. Regular washing at 60 degrees will ensure the problem is managed and does not get out of control.
  • Protect your mattresses and bed linen – Where possible use mattress, duvet and pillow protectors. These items will ensure that dust mites do not penetrate into the fabric fibres and main body of the mattress
  • Vacuum your carpets daily – Simple advice. and one the most effective things you can do. Vacuuming daily reduces the number of dust mites living in your carpets and upholstery and reduces the risk of breeding.
  • Increase ventilation – Dust mites thrive in humid environments, so ensure that your home is correctly ventilated. Install and use extractor fans, or open windows and doors while cooking or after bathing to ensure that steam is removed, instead of gathering and creating the humidity mites love.
  • Get your carpets and upholstery cleaned regularly – Even a clean looking carpet or suite will contain dust mites.  So don't just clean for appearance.  Regular cleaning every 12-18 months will help to greatly reduce mite numbers.  For allergy sufferers we also offer an anti-allergen treatment using an all natural solution which renders dust mite allergens completely harmless.
  • Use a specialist anti-allergen spray– We have a topical spray which can be applied as often as required to carpets, upholstery, mattresses, bed linen and curtains. Our Dust Mite Anti-Allergen spray neutralises dust mite allergens and provides effective allergy relief for up to 90 days after application, ideal for use between your regular cleans.

If you're taking part in the NHS National Stop Smoking Campaign we can help you get rid of those lingering odours which just might tempt you.

Stoptober_logo (1)

If you didn't know, this month, the NHS are running a national stop smoking campaign. The second Stoptober campaign is well under way, and already, 230 000 people are taking part. We've already had a few people mention they've stopped smoking and are wanting to rid their home of any lingering smoke odours and as part of your 'clean-up' we can help you freshen up your carpets and soft furnishings.
As well as cleaning we also offer a range of fragrances that can be added to the cleaning solution, or if the carpets have been cleaned recently it can be simply sprayed over carpets and upholstery after the clean using a DIY product, available in our online shop.  Just mention the deodorisor to the technician who visits to quote and he'll be more than happy to let you sample the choice of fragrance we can use.
For more information regarding the fragrances, how to use them and how to order, please contact Mary or Janet in our office on 01709 464555.

There are four steps to Fresher, Cleaner & Healthier Home, here's Step 4...

STEP No. 4: Once you’re satisfied that you’re working with an honest, competent business, invite them to your home and ask for a specific quotation in writing, remember – it should be free and place you under no obligation what-so-ever. A written quotation should give you the assurance that you know exactly what service you will receive and what your job will cost – no surprises.
By following these four steps, you’ll gain all the information you need to make an informed, intelligent decision. If you want a quick, cheap cleaning job many companies in the telephone directories can help you. You could even rent a shampooing machine from a local shop and do the job yourself. If you want your carpets and upholstery cleaning properly and safely, then choose a reputable professional company that can deliver all your objectives and guarantee their work.

FIRSTLY, DON'T PANIC!

Emergency Cleaning TipsAccidents do happen and most can be resolved, sometimes without needing to call us.  The advice below (put together with the National Carpet Cleaners Association) is here to help, no matter what the circumstances.

If something gets spilled on to your carpet, prompt action is required to prevent permanent staining.

Be Prepared

As well as the Professional Spotting Products you can purchase from us there are some common things you can have ready to hand in case of spills and stains:

  • Clean white absorbent cloth or towel
  • Dry Cleaning Solution - Surgical Spirit (usually available from local Chemists)
  • Detergent Solution - One teaspoonful of gentle detergent for washing woollens, to half a pint (0.3 litres) of warm water
  • Detergent Vinegar Solution - Add one teaspoonful of white (not malt) vinegar to the Detergent Solution
  • Ammonia Solution - One teaspoonful of branded household Ammonia (available from hardware stores) to one cup of warm water

General Tips

  • Do not over wet the carpet or upholstery into the backing materials
  • Always test each product on an inconspicuous area of carpet or fabric prior to treating a stain
  • Use products at the recommended dilution ratios
  • Scrape up or blot up any excess prior to treatment
  • Blot, never scrub or rub the area
  • Do not use inappropriate detergents on carpets or upholstery i.e. (washing up liquid, wash powders, household bleach or disinfectants)
  • Always work from the outside of the stain inward to avoid spreading
  • Always apply solvents to the absorbent towel, not directly onto the carpet or fabric
  • Encourage quick drying (carefully use a hairdryer on mild heat)
  • Keep the fabric or carpet as dry as possible.

Alcohol, Tea, Coffee, Liquid Foods or Urine

  • Blot up surplus spillage
  • If you have our Professional Strength Spot Remover use as per instructions on the can.
  • If not use Detergent Vinegar Solution, a little at a time
  • Work from the outer edge of the stain inwards
  • Frequently blot with dry cloths
  • See below for final rinse procedure

Chocolate, Sweets, Blood, Glue, Egg, Ice Cream, Milk, Soft Drinks, Vomit

  • Scrape up excess with a blunt knife
  • If you have our Professional Strength Spot Remover use as per instructions on the can.
  • If not, use a Detergent Solution starting at the outer edge
  • Blot dry
  • Follow up with Ammonia Solution
  • Blot dry
  • See below for final rinse procedure

First Aid for the spills on your CarpetSolids, Fats, Tar, Chewing Gum, Oil, Ointment, Shoe Polish

  • Scrape up excess with a blunt knife
  • If you have one use our Grease and Oil Remover Aerosol can as per instructions
  • If not, use a Dry Cleaning Solution followed by Detergent Vinegar Solution
  • Blot dry
  • See below for final rinse procedure

Unknown Stains

  • Scrape up or blot surplus spillage
  • If you have one use our Professional Strength Spot Remover as per instruction on the can
  • If this isn't successful use our Grease and Oil Remover aerosol as per instructions
  • If you don;t have the above products use a Dry Cleaning Solution followed by clean luke warm water
  • Blot dry
  • If further treatment is needed, use either Detergent or Detergent Vinegar Solution
  • Blot dry
  • See below for final rinse procedure

Final Rinse Procedure

This is not necessary if you've used our retail products, ie the Professional Spot Remover or Grease and Oil Remover aerosol as per the instructions.  If you have used the DIY remedies then please follow these carefully

  • Mix one-part white vinegar and four-parts water
  • Pour mixture into a spray bottle and spray over the stained area
  • Blot dampened area (do not rub) to remove excess moisture
  • Spread white kitchen towel (stacked 6-8 sheets deep) or absorbent cloth over the affected area and place a weight, such as a telephone directory, on top
  • Leave overnight and repeat if necessary

Whilst the stain removal guide may be basic, it should help prevent some quite common and expensive DIY stain removal damage. Unfortunately, there can never be a guarantee of complete removal of a stain, but the correct routine will give us the best possible chance of success if you call us in.
REMEMBER: Act Quickly. Scrape up solids, blot up liquids. Take plenty of time, it is worth the effort. Mix the solution accurately and test it on an out of the way piece of carpet. Always work from the outer edge of the stain to the centre. Dab or blot rather than scrub or rub. And, most importantly, NEVER OVER-WET.
NOTE: We are aware that some new carpets have been subjected to anti-static and soil-resistant treatments. Even when these have been applied, it is wise to follow the stain removal procedures suggested.

Why cheap cleaning companies may not always be what they appear to be.  This is asales technique known as 'bait & switch'.  Ie, they give you a low price to get ino your home, then it starts!  Take a look at hat the BBC said about companies like this...
BBC - Watchdog: A rogue who needs to clean up his act....

QUESTION: How can I remove Lily Pollen from my carpet?

Answer

If you’ve been unlucky enough to get lily pollen on your carpet be very careful not to press it into the carpet fibres.  Also, don’t let the pollen get wet!

Grab a roll of sticky tape and gently place it over the pollen.  The pollen will stick to the tape.  Using a new piece of tape every time, continue with this until all the pollen is removed.

You can prevent it happening again by snipping out the stamens of the lily before it comes into full bloom.  Catch them on a plate or similar and dispose of them, better safe than sorry.

If the above procedure hasn't completely removed the pollen we may be able to help.  We have a specialist product for Lily pollen, but it's not 100% guaranteed to work.  If you've not got all the pollen all out we'd recommend you contact your contents insurer and see if you have Accidental Damage cover.  If you do they may pay for us to come and attempt the specialist removal.  If we can't remove it we'll supply a letter to your insurer confirming that for you.
